WK Throwdowns

Slave River Throwdowns are coming up, we are just waiting for winter to get lost!  Crazy long winter that was super cold, but it does not seem like it wants to go away.  Regardless, for those heading out of Fort Smith, NT; here is a map of other events happening.

Mountain Khakis is Confirmed for the 2013 WK Hometown Throwdown season!

Each year I get the opportunity to work with a number of great companies that support WW kayaking through the WK Hometown Throwdowns.  I have been working with Erin from Mtn. Khakis for a number of years now and her desire to help WK in our community growing initative has been nothing short of spectacular!  This year she introduced me to another Mtn. Khakis employee who is out there on the river getting it done with his paddling community.  Dom Clark and his friends started the “Dope Flow Boat Show”  this past summer to document their boating fun.  I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Dom, and here is what he had to say.

-          Dom, what boating community do you call home?  How long have you been involved in WW kayaking?

Indiana will always be my home, but the southeast is where it’s at for paddling.  I started flatwater kayaking when I was 16 and quickly became fascinated with whitewater.  I grew up in Indiana and my buddies and I would take our flatwater boats down any “gnar” that we could find.  There is a 3 foot ledge on the Flatrock River (Class I), my hometown run, that is what really got me hungry for whitewater.    I have been whitewater paddling for five years now.

-          What aspect of WW boating is most appealing to you?  (community, challenge, travel, exploration)

I love the challenge of running new rivers and seeing beautiful gorges that can only be accessed from the river.    I also like the brotherhood that develops between you and your fellow boaters.  To be honest, all aspects of WW boating are appealing to me, besides long portages!

-          You work at Mtn. Khakis, who has been a fantastic partner of WK for 6 years now.  Tell us a little something that we don’t know about your great company that pertains to boaters.

MK has been a sponsor of the hometown throwdowns for 7 years now and I am working to get MK more involved in the world of whitewater.  As a side note, our Flannel-Lined Original Mountain Pants are awesome after a cold day of paddling!

-          You and your paddling buddies have started a video project.  Fill us in on what you are calling it and what you guys are looking to accomplish with the project.

John Higginbotham, Greg Nance and Logan Curry are the “founding fathers” of the  “Dope Flow Boat Show.”   it was created this summer to showcase our kayaking videos.  Despite the name, DFBS does not have any negative connotations towards drugs or anything of an inappropriate nature.  In a nutshell, Dope Flow Boat Show is a group that brings together badass kayakers.  Our mission is to shed light on our sport through our videos and to bring new people into the world of whitewater.  We always strive to set a good example for the youngins.  We are going to make some informative/educational videos to explain some river running/creeking skills and some important safety precautions on the river.  Although we do run stout whitewater, safety is always our number one priority.  This is currently something that we are doing for fun, maybe it will turn into something bigger!

-          Thanks for your time.  Is there anything else that you want to share with the WK audience?

Get on the river and stay tuned for episode 3!

WK Slave River Throwdown #3

Well, we had a downriver as planned. It started just above the Playground Rapid and finished at the Beginner’s Point just below the take out. A little hard in playboats, but regardless, paddling on this river will almost always happen in playboats.

Our season is ending and the water is getting colder. The seven paddlers who braved the event decided to enter into one class: expert

Below are the results.

WK Slave River Throwdown #2

Our second Throwdown of the season went off well at Slave Paddle Fest this year. With a total of 266 festival participants, 77 of those came out to the whitewater events including the WK Throwdown.

The event took place in the hole at the top of Playground Rapid on the Slave River. This second event was run as a freestyle event with points being awarded based upon each heats paddling ability.

Next Throwdown coming up will be a downriver race. Location TBA, but this series is going to not select the best playboater, but best all around boater! See the results below.

WK Slave River Throwdown#1

Last night was the first of the World Kayak Hometown Throwdowns at the Playground Rapid on the Slave River. This event was run as a Boater Cross through the rapid. A good night for all, especially our beginners who managed the Playground with skill and ease. Our event started with a seal launch off of the rocks near the top of the rapid with paddlers making it past the second island before cutting into the big bay on river left and paddling upstream to the finish. Super fun and really tiring!

Location:
Yellow House: 39 McDougal Road
There will be a whiteboard on the porch with information on it. We will meet at the Yellow House for all sessions

Tuesdays:”Beginner Club Nights”
When: Tuesday’s in July and August. Meet at the Yellow House at 1900 Hours (7PM). We will head to the river at 1930 (7:30PM) once gear, rides and shuttles have been sorted out
Where: Start at Playground Rapid and run to Golf Course, Slave River
Level: Beginners and those who have taken the Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking course or paddled at the pool this winter/spring. We will offer this evening to only 3 completely new beginners for each session. (then you can join in every week) Please call ahead to reserve a spot if you are brand new.
Description: All sessions will warm up at various locations of Playground Rapid. We will then continue on down the Golf Course run. This is a great way to build on skills learned in the Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking course and to develop other skills such as rolling and surfing. The focus will be to play and have fun in the familiar runs for those who want an easyno consequences chill out paddling night.
Objective: To end up at the Golf Course with smiles on our faces and a beer in our hand!
Cost: $40/person/session (membership and rental) or $170/person for the season (membership and gear rental)
Equipment: You can paddle kayaks, canoes, inflatable kayaks or raft. Please remember that the hill at the Golf Course is long so you may not want to hike a raft or inflatable kayak up the hill. The canoes should not be a problem if everyone helps each other.

June 26th and July 3, 2012: These evenings will be a warm up at the playground and a repeat of eddy lines for those who haven’t done it yet and who needs practice. It is also a chance for those who have been in the pool this winter to get the river feel.

Wednesdays: “Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking”
If you have friends who have never kayaked before, this is the time to sign them up to the club and get them out on the river!
When: July 4th, July 18th, August 8th, 2012. Meet at the Yellow House at 1900 Hours (7PM). We will head to the river at 1930 (7:30PM) once gear, rides and shuttles have been sorted out

Level: Never paddled before.
Description: We will start in the big bay at Playground, then work down to the Beginner’s Eddy Lines below. Once comfortable there will be an option of paddling through the waves at Playground Rapid
Objective: Learn to get in and out of eddies, ferry across the river, paddle waves and encourage those who take one of these beginner nights to join in on the “Tuesday Beginner Club Nights”
Cost: $40/person/session (membership and rental) or $170/person for the season (membership and gear rental)
Equipment: Kayaks only

This is limited to 8 people/session. Please register in advance with Saskia

Thursdays: “Intermediate Club Night”

Where: Location TBA depending on water level
Level: Intermediate and those with a good consistent river roll, who are able to assist swimmers, feel comfortable on the river and who want to paddle more than just the Golf Course run.
Description: To pick a new section of the river each week and develop paddling skills. We will be focusing on various locations through Cassette Rapid, far side of Mountain Portage and far side of Rapids of the Drowned. As levels drop and skill increases we will offer up bigger runs and some of the more classic lines. The idea is to run a 3:1 or 4:1 student to instructor/leader ratio on the river.
Objective: To explore the river, get comfortable playing around on the river and get excited to share this river with other boaters.
Cost: $40/person/session (membership and rental) or $170/person for the season (membership and gear rental)
Equipment: Kayaks only

World Kayak Throwdown:”Playground Boatercross”
